Frequently Asked Questions Q. What kind of Martial Art is Samurai School? A. Samurai School is a blend of Ninjutsu, Jujutsu, Judo and Karate training. It is a self defence orientated martial arts which teaches students defence and escape techniques against unarmed and armed attackers. Q. How old does my child need to be to attend Samurai School? A. Samurai School is specifically designed for children aged 7 to 14 years old however children as young as 5 years old can participate in Samurai Kindy. Q. What happens when my child turns 14? A. Samurai School is designed to introduce students to many styles of martial arts especially Ninjutsu and Jujutsu. Samurai School adopts most of its training concepts from Ninpo Goshinjutsu Mu Te Jinen Ryu which is the style we teach to students above the age of 14 years old. If you choose to continue with us as an adult your grade will be transferred to the equivalent grade. A green stripe might well qualify you for a full green belt in the adult school for instance. More information can be found at http://www.mutejinenryu.com Q. Does my child require any special clothing? A. For starters your child can wear tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt. If your child enjoys training and wishes to continue we recommend (as a minimum) a black training uniform which costs around £12.95 and black Samurai School T-shirt which will cost £10.00. These items are available from your instructor or from www.goshinjutsu.com Q. Does my child require any special training equipment? A. Protective gloves are provided at first membership and all other equipment the student will require is provided by the club. As students advance safe training weapons are introduced - please note that we cannot sell weapons to anyone under the age of 18 years. Q. Do you do any sparring (free fighting)? A. Because our philosophy of the Martial Arts is one of self defence we do not teach students to free-fight. Instead we use attack and defence scenarios which involve avoiding and escaping instead of fighting. Q. Do you have competitions? A. The Samurai School philosophy is about self improvement rather than being better than someone else. We understand however that competition can be a good way to focus on training as well refine our technique and form. We held our first competition in November 2007 which focused on individual and team kata. This has helped students develop skills such as team work and goal setting. The Samurai School does not promote fighting and will therefore not hold or participate in kumite (fighting) style competitions.
